Coal-Fired Utilities

Mercury emissions created by coal-fired boilers in power plants are a critical environmental concern.

Mercury emissions from coal-fired boilers are a serious environmental concern due to the toxicity and persistence of mercury that creates air pollution and accumulates in our waterways. With the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) in the United States, the Canada-wide Standards for Mercury Emissions, and increasing scrutiny throughout the world, utilities are faced with a challenging regulatory environment. We are uniquely qualified to provide utilities with robust, cost effective solutions to enable compliance with these stringent standards.

Cabot Norit Activated Carbon pioneered the use of powdered activated carbon (PAC) technology for mercury emission control in the 1980s with municipal waste incineration. The DARCO® Hg family of PAC products is used on more boilers than any other competitive product grouping on the market, and we continue to create new products to help our customers achieve low total cost of compliance.

Coal-fired Utility Product Innovations

2005: DARCO Hg

Flue gas with highly oxidized mercury content, typically due to the presence of a halogen, either native in the fuel source or added.

2005: DARCO Hg-LH

Flue gas that lacks halogen content to convert elemental mercury to oxidized mercury. Treated with bromine to oxidize mercury.

2010: DARCO Hg-CC

Maintains the beneficial use of fly ash, including low relative foam index (RFI). Treated with bromine to oxidize mercury.

Achieves greater than 90% mercury removal from flue gas at activated carbon injection rates up to 40% lower than our own industry benchmark product in sorbent injection plant trials. Enhanced patented manufacturing process which includes bromine treatment to oxidize mercury.

High efficiency version of DARCO Hg-CC activated carbon with improved mercury oxidation, lower RFI. Enhanced patented manufacturing process which includes bromine treatment to oxidize mercury.
